Named for Commander Howard W. Gilmore (USN) who, in the highest tradition
of the United States Navy, gave his life for his Men, Ship & Country.
The Howard W. Gilmore was originally named the USS Neptune until the death
of Cmdr. Gilmore when the ship was renamed in his honor.
Service to the Sub Fleet
